more About Me

Born in Leichhardt, New South Wales in 1942, Brian Maloney studied at Julian Ashton’s art school in George Street North in ‘The Rocks’ area in Sydney, as well as under Kevin Oxley at Clarendon in outer Sydney.

He worked as a commercial artist for a period and later travelled through Europe and Asia in the early 1970s, visiting North Africa and Morocco as well as the UK and Italy and travelling back to Australia via the Middle East, India and Nepal.

During the 1980s and 1990s he took a keen interest in marine life while living at Manly and began scuba diving in around Sydney Harbour and venturing outside the Sydney Heads.

When new owners purchased Manly Marineworld and created the larger Manly Oceanworld, Brian was commissioned to paint a large mural on one of the main areas of the aquarium. This led to other work, including another mural at Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef.

The management of this business were insistent that the colours of the mural were as accurate as possible, and encouraged Brian to go diving every day until the work was completed.

Brian has held numerous exhibitions in Sydney, Australia, throughout the 1970s and 1980s and was a guest on television’s A Current Affair (ACA), Terry Willesee Tonight (TWT) and Simon Townend’s Wonderworld.
